Chapter Sixteen

Bishop

“I need to go,” Laken says, standing.

“Laken.” Penny tightens her hand in his. His other has already healed. All shifters can heal fast, but it’s still painful.

“Brother, you don’t have to.” He pushes his need into my mind. “You should stay.”

“I’ll be back. Elijah has been blowing up my phone all morning.” He kisses Penny on the head. “Take care of him,” he whispers.

He always knows what to do for me. I love when it is just the three of us, but I feel raw after reliving those memories. With Penny’s soft body cuddled on mine, all I want to do is get lost in her presence.

“Of course,” Penny assures him.

“If I don’t go to the cabin to meet the cheetah, he’ll show up here. I’ll be close.” He grabs his phone.

Penny watches him leave, frowning. “Is he going to be alright?”

“He will. He’s not used to speaking about his feelings. He needs a distraction,” I assure her. I caress her back. I grasp the back of her neck, nudging her head. Once she gives me her attention, I say, “I promise. He will be fine.”

“I care about you both,” she admits. “I don’t like seeing either of you in pain.”

“I’m glad.” I kiss her softly. “How are you feeling about what you have learned?” I don’t want her to look at either of us in a bad way.

“It makes me sad.” She rests her hands on my chest. “I know what it feels like to be held against your will. I hate that you had to go through that. The image of your sister in that position is heartbreaking. I wish I had a brother like you two. Someone that would do anything to protect me. It’s so commendable.”

“I wish I wasn’t in the position to have to do it.” I lift her chin. “You may not have had that growing up, but you do now.”

“Don’t say shit like that,” she cries.

I laugh. “Why?”

“It makes it so much harder to resist you.” She taps my chest.

I cover her hand with mine. “Good.” I sigh. “I know what’s it’s like to have nightmares,” I say seriously. “I did for years. They aren’t as bad now, but I still do. What we have been through isn’t something that can be washed away easily. But we can’t hold it inside. I’m learning to accept that it wasn’t my fault. It wasn’t your fault either.” Her lashes lower, and I tip up her chin. “You don’t have to hide your feelings from me or Laken. We understand.”

“It’s hard to share,” she whispers.

“I know. I think I’ve talked more to you since we met than anyone for years. I tried to hide from Laken and Saphira, just as Laken was hiding his demons from me.”

“I want to be strong.”

“You are incredibly strong.” I graze my thumb over her lip.

“Sometimes I don’t feel that way,” she confesses.

“I don’t either,” I whisper. “It’s difficult to admit, and I don’t like asking for help.” She nods. “How about we help each other? It will be our secret, no one outside of the three of us will know.
