Chapter Sixteen
Bishop
âI need to go,â Laken says, standing.
âLaken.â Penny tightens her hand in his. His other has already healed. All shifters can heal fast, but itâs still painful.
âBrother, you donât have to.â He pushes his need into my mind. âYou should stay.â
âIâll be back. Elijah has been blowing up my phone all morning.â He kisses Penny on the head. âTake care of him,â he whispers.
He always knows what to do for me. I love when it is just the three of us, but I feel raw after reliving those memories. With Pennyâs soft body cuddled on mine, all I want to do is get lost in her presence.
âOf course,â Penny assures him.
âIf I donât go to the cabin to meet the cheetah, heâll show up here. Iâll be close.â He grabs his phone.
Penny watches him leave, frowning. âIs he going to be alright?â
âHe will. Heâs not used to speaking about his feelings. He needs a distraction,â I assure her. I caress her back. I grasp the back of her neck, nudging her head. Once she gives me her attention, I say, âI promise. He will be fine.â
âI care about you both,â she admits. âI donât like seeing either of you in pain.â
âIâm glad.â I kiss her softly. âHow are you feeling about what you have learned?â I donât want her to look at either of us in a bad way.
âIt makes me sad.â She rests her hands on my chest. âI know what it feels like to be held against your will. I hate that you had to go through that. The image of your sister in that position is heartbreaking. I wish I had a brother like you two. Someone that would do anything to protect me. Itâs so commendable.â
âI wish I wasnât in the position to have to do it.â I lift her chin. âYou may not have had that growing up, but you do now.â
âDonât say shit like that,â she cries.
I laugh. âWhy?â
âIt makes it so much harder to resist you.â She taps my chest.
I cover her hand with mine. âGood.â I sigh. âI know whatâs itâs like to have nightmares,â I say seriously. âI did for years. They arenât as bad now, but I still do. What we have been through isnât something that can be washed away easily. But we canât hold it inside. Iâm learning to accept that it wasnât my fault. It wasnât your fault either.â Her lashes lower, and I tip up her chin. âYou donât have to hide your feelings from me or Laken. We understand.â
âItâs hard to share,â she whispers.
âI know. I think Iâve talked more to you since we met than anyone for years. I tried to hide from Laken and Saphira, just as Laken was hiding his demons from me.â
âI want to be strong.â
âYou are incredibly strong.â I graze my thumb over her lip.
âSometimes I donât feel that way,â she confesses.
âI donât either,â I whisper. âItâs difficult to admit, and I donât like asking for help.â She nods. âHow about we help each other? It will be our secret, no one outside of the three of us will know.
